About the Presentation:
The state sanctioned murder of many Black and Indigenous people over the past few years has awoken many to the realization that racism is not simply a result of the isolate racist, but is something built into the very foundations of this system and its institution. In particular the murder of George Floyd earlier this year saw the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter Movement, no longer demanding a reforming of the system of policing but a complete overhaul. No longer confident in the ability of the police to reform itself, thousands have flooded the streets demanding its defunding and outright abolition. But in order to effectively fight something, we must understand it. We must do this by asking, what then is the police, and who do they truly protect and serve? What is the state? How do we go about building a society free of racism, state violence, and the police? And what exactly is this system that underlies and necessitates racism?
